Altura is the tiny two person operation of Irene and Francesco Carfagna on the windy and wild island of Giglio. Giglio is part of the Tuscan Archipelago that stretches between the island of Corsica and Tuscany. Inhabited since the Stone Age, wine production likely began with the Etruscans and certainly continued with the Roman Empire.
These are the types of wines for which we go absolutely crazy. Heroic agriculture with vines towering above the ocean on steep cliffs, ripe wines with that Mediterranean bite, salty and mineral rich wines, literal hand written labels, absolutely organic farming and very little intervention in the cellar. They are soulful and haunting, and just a couple of swirls of the glass will transport you to a place of salt and sun.
Francesco's daughter Irene will be generously joining us in the shop. You do not want to miss this one!
